"ill" Gotten Gains
Contributed by: John Kirgan on 10/15/2006

The UN Security Council approved sanctions against N. Korea. The USA wanted all countries to inspect cargo leaving and arriving in Korea to prevent any illegal trafficing of weapons and missiles. As usual, Russia and China, N. Korea's strongest and biggest partner in trade vetoed these searches as part of the sanctions. Why? Russia is in the top five of the countries that sell weapons around the world and China is seventh of the countries that depend on weapons sales to bolster their economies. China said it will not search any N. Korean vessels to and from China.
Japan and Austrailia made it clear they would immediately enforce the sanctions and impose harsher measures. Whatever "harsher measures" mean. In the UN Security Council report there is no elaboration. N. Korea immediately rejected the resolution, resolution #1, let's see how many resolutions are used. 12. How many? 12 did not deter Saddam Hussein, and the N. Korean ambassador walked out of the council chamber, after accusing the members of "gang-like" action and said the USA nuclear threat is far greater.
The resolution demands that "ill" abandons his nuclear weapons program and orders all countries to prevent N. Korea from importing or exporting any material for WMD or ballistic missiles. Assets of individuals or businesses linked to those programs must be frozen and the individuals are banned from traveling. Traveling to where? The report is vague on that point.
US ambassador, John Bolton, said N. Korea's test "poses one of the gravest threats to international peace and security that this council has ever had to confront. Oh, by the way, Iran's nuclear ambitions come before the security council again next week.
N. Korean ambassador, Pak Gil Yon, rebutted by blaming the USA for forcing the country to conduct a test because of the USA's "nuclear threat", sanctions, and pressure. Pak said N. Korea is ready for talks, which they walked out on 13 months ago, while continuing their work on missiles and nuclear proliferation. He added, " If the USA continues pressure, N' Korea will consider it a declaration of war and re-act appropriately. Whatever that means. N. Korea said it may conduct another nuclear test in response to the sanctions.
The resolution demands that N. Korea eliminate all it's nuclear weapons but expressly rules out military action against the country. So what's the point? If sanctions are defied, that's it? A demand, by who else? Russia and China. Bolton warned "ill" however, that if the "little dictator" (my words) continues pursuing nuclear weapons, the USA would take it upon itself to seek further measures. What those measures would be was not elaborated on.
Japan is considering additional sanctions to go along with it's ban of trade and closing ports to N. Korea. The resolution aimed at N. Korea's small "elite" community, also bans the sale of luxury items to the country. "ill" may miss his cognac, lobster, and fine French wines, although I'm sure the "little-guy" has these items safely stashed away somewhere in large numbers along with the "porn" and beautiful women it is said he enjoys.
To meet Russian and Chinese concerns, the USA had to eliminate a complete ban on the sale of conventional weapons. Again, Russia and China make "mega-bucks" on weapons sales. Instead, the embargo is limited to major hardware such as tanks, warships, combat aircraft and misilles.
So there you have it. The UN Security Council's report in brief. Go to their website and you can read the whole report.
Let's see how "ill" reacts to the "measures". It doesn't matter what their ambassador says, it matters what "ill" says.
As an after thought, Venezuela is strongly advocating it's desire to be a member of the UN Security Council. So now we have to deal with the real life three stooges. Amadinajad, Kim Jong "ill", and Hugo. Sounds like a comedy routine. I can assure you these three are not comedians in a pie-throwing routine. They want to throw "heavier" stuff at the USA.
