Fear Factor
Contributed by: Bonnie Pfiester on 3/14/2006

It’s no big surprise that the number one obstacle that seems to prevent people from joining a gym is fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of embarrassment, fear of failure...the list goes on. I often compare visiting a health club to the first time you visit a new church.

A first-time guest in an unfamiliar environment is usually a nervous wreck and feels like everyone is looking at them. Some have even fooled their selves in to thinking they have to lose a weight before joining a health club or exercising in public. Getting “leaned up” for a gym is just as silly as thinking you have to get “cleaned up” for church.

A health club, like a church, should be the one place you should run to, not avoid. It’s the best place to go and often is only used as a last resort. The majority of the members, church & club alike, are there for the same reason. If they are not trying to get their act together, they are trying to keep it together. Where else can you find that much accountability, support, guidance and education to help improve your life, physical or spiritual? Do you see the parallel?

Maybe it’s time that you made some decisions in your life. I’m not saying that you need to join a health club, but don’t let fear get in the way of something you feel you need. Take your time and visit area clubs. Vero has a fantastic selection of health clubs, each with a unique niche. There are differences and similarities in health clubs just like there are in churches. Different styles of music, programs, people and services will help you choose the right place for you. The first step is walking through the doors.
