Local Athletes Star in AAU Karate Tournament

192 of the best Karate athletes in the state convened at Sebastian River High School on Saturday, February 18th to compete in the Florida AAU Karate East Coast Championships . Medalists in this event qualified to compete in the National AAU Championships to be held in Miami this summer.
Among local athletes, Rachel Kepley and Jan Fraley both won Gold medals in forms competition, in fighting and in weapons competition. Madison Cook took a gold medal in Forms and Silver in fighting. Chase Brooks, competing in his first tournament, won gold in fighting and silver in forms.
Also competing for the first time, Chris Docherty won gold in fighting and his brother Kyle won Bronze in both forms and fighting events.
Perennial winner, Kevin Crawford, took a gold in fighting. Gunnar Flinchum won silver in forms and gold in fighting. Morgan Flinchum won Gold in forms and bronze in fighting. Andrew Gates won silver in Fighting.
Lars Koht was a bronze medalist in fighting and won silver in weapons. Jake Koontz took silver in forms and gold in fighting. Emily Lunn, competing in three categories, finished bronze in forms, gold in fighting and bronze in weapons. Alexa Mertens and Amy Pasqualone were bronze medalists in both forms and fighting.
Ticer Pfeifer took a gold medal in weapons and Stephen Queen won bronze in forms and silver in fighting.
All of these athletes train at Florida Karate Academy in Vero Beach.
