VBHS golf team wins third title
Contributed by: Ron Gielow on 10/13/2006

The Vero Beach High School's Boy's Golf Team captured their third consecutive District Championship Monday Oct. 9th at Fairwinds Golf Club. The boy's defeated 9 other high schools to claim the title. Vero's Sterling Searcy became the District Champion by shooting an outstanding 1 under par 71. His teammate, Charles Peavley, was the District runner-up, shooting an even par 72. They were followed by Justin Guess and Tim Vold who both shot 77, and Graham Bradshaw's 82. Martin County and South Fork tied for 2nd, 5 shots behind Vero. This is the second straight year Vero upset South Fork who came into the District Tournament undefeated both years.

Coach Ron Gielow was particularly pleased with not only having the District Champion in Searcy, but also to have the Runner-up in Peavley. Both boys stepped it up and played outstanding golf. I'm really happy for Stearling. He is a super kid. He has been working very hard on his game. He is a coaches dream. He was also very proud of his team's success. To win 1 District Championship is very tough to do. To win 3 straight is quite an accomplishment.

Vero now even has a bigger challenge. They travel to Baytree gof course to try to capture a third straight Regional Golf Championship. To win the Region for the 3rd consecutive year would be unbelievable. The top 9 teams from all of Palm Beach, Martin County, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Bevard counties will compeat for only 2 spots to play in the State Finals. Only 16 teams in the state will advance to the Finals. Vero will be trying to reach the Finals for the 4th straight year, finishing 7th place the past two years and 11th the year before.
