Children's Summer Program at the IRC Main Library
Contributed by: Patti Fuchs on 5/16/2008

Check out the Whole Wide World @ My Public Library, this summer's Florida Library Youth Programs theme, at the Indian River County Main Library in Vero Beach June 13 th through August 8 th. The program features something for everyone from babies to 6 th graders and everyone in between,

Entering kindergartners through 6th graders are invited to participate in the annual FLYP Reading Challenge. Children should obtain a copy of the Summer Schedule, and look on the back to find a Reading Log. We encourage children to read for at least twenty minutes, three times a week. Each time they do so, they should mark it on their Reading Log. At the end of each week, they will have their Log stamped by a staff member of the Children's Department where they will receive a small prize that corresponds with that week's theme.

Six through twelve year olds are invited to become Explorers every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30to 2:30. It is not mandatory that children attend both days, but it is encouraged. This program will feature storytelling, creative dramatics, song, dance, games, and a craft.

Little ones are invited to story-time on Wednesdays. Eighteen month to three year olds will meet from 10:00 to 10:30 and three to five year olds will meet from 11:00 to 11:45. This program will follow the same weekly theme as the Explorers but include more age appropriate stories, songs, and crafts.

Pajama Time will continue into the summer. The Night Beat will meet on Thursdays from 6:00 to 6:45. This program is open to two to eight year olds. It includes storytelling, creative dramatics, songs, and a craft.

The babies will be on the loose again this summer with a bit of a change. Books & Babies will meet on Tuesdays from 10:00 to 11:00. This summer, instead of stories and songs starting out each program, the class will begin with a lesson in baby sign language. The lesson will be followed by group play.

A Sign Language Class for eighteen month to five year olds will take place on Thursdays at 10:00. This is a fun way to broaden your child's mind as well as communicate more effectively.

As always our Special Guest Series is back on Fridays with more of the fun and exciting shows you love. Page Turner Adventures will kick off a summer of fun on Friday, June 13 th at 10:30. Their fun, entertaining, and award winning show is fun for the whole family. Tickets are required for the July 11 th Paleo Discoveries shows as well as the August 1 st Busch Wildlife Shows. Free tickets will be available starting June 13 th.

Only children need tickets, not adults.

For more information on the Summer Programs, including details on our Special Guest Series, pick up a Children's Program Schedule at the library or go to our website at www.irclibrary.org and click on Children.
