Anorexia, bulimia and other eating problems are of great concern to parents today. "What Every Parent Needs to Know About Positive Body Image and Eating Disorders" will be the topic of the next meeting of the new Health-E Teens Coalition to be held on Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m., at the Vero Beach Community Center. Speakers will be Anne Lanier and Kay Sheppard, M.A.

Anne Lanier is a graduate of the University of Alabama, and taught English for 10 years at Sebastian River Middle School, followed by 10 years at Sebastian High School where she also coordinated the dropout prevention program. In memory of a daughter who died from medical complications caused by anorexia, Lanier recently established and provided the initial funding for the Rebecca Anne Streetman Memorial Fund for Eating Disorders under the auspices of the Mental Health Association. Its goals are to provide (1) services for eating disorder sufferers and (2) education to prevent eating disorders.

Kay Sheppard is the best-selling author of Food Addiction: The Body Knows and From the First Bite. A licensed mental health counselor and a certified eating disorders specialist, she conducts workshops for food addicts worldwide. Since the beginning her own recovery in 1977, Sheppard has helped thousands of people live happy and healthy lives by following a comprehensive recovery program. She will discuss ways to eliminate cravings for various foods, how to recognize the dangers in so-called "health" foods; how to overcome emotional barriers to recovery; and how to recognize the warning signs of relapse.

The Health-E Teens Coalition was organized to afford opportunities for parents of teenagers to learn more about the many difficult choices facing today's young people, and ways they can help their children deal healthily with these choices. The Coalition theme for this year is "What Every Parent Needs to Know," and speaker experts are covering issues such as teen suicide, peer pressure, sexually transmitted diseases, the new HPV vaccine, media influence and internet safety, teens' redefinition of sex, bullying and cliques, self-esteem and other mental health problems.

All are welcome at the monthly meetings - parents, grandparents, educators and others disquieted about the problems affecting our youth. Teens are also welcome (bring your parents). Annual membership fees are $10 to cover meeting costs. The community center is located at 14th Avenue and 23rd Street.
