DONNA HARRIS TO ADDRESS SEPTEMBER HEALTH-E TEENS
Contributed by: Joyce Levi on 8/18/2007

Donna M. Harris, TIPPS coordinator for St. Lucie County, will be guest speaker at the September meeting of the Health-E Teens Coalition, to be held at the Vero Beach Community Center at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 20. TIPPS stands for Teen Impact for Pregancy Prevention and Services.

Formed last fall, the Health-E Teens Coalition is beginning its second year of providing expert information to parents of teenagers, based on the parental need to be informed on issues and decision-making affecting their children.

In St. Lucie County, Harris conducts a workshop called, "If Parents and Educators Don't Give Kids the Facts about Sex - Who Will?" She will focus on that topic at the Coalition's September meeting. "Teens," she stated, "get information about sex from a multitude of sources, some good, some bad, but the most influential source is their parents." Harris will present tips about talking to teens about relationships and sex, and will present statistics on teen pregnancy along with information from TIPPS surverys.

With a BA in Psychology from the University of Central Florida, Harris is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Health Education at Mississippi State. She has been working as a health educator for St. Lucie County since 1997, involved in youth tobacco prevention, school bullying reduction, domestic violence awareness, bike safety and teen pregnancy prevention.

The Health-E Teens Coalition was formed last fall by Claudia Jiménez and Judy Orcutt, parents of teenage daughters, who became aware that they needed to know more about parenting adolescents. Based on the theme "What Every Parent Needs to Know," programs presented during the first season covered peer pressure, sexually transmitted diseases, the new HPV vaccine, body image including bulimia-anorexia-obesity, self-esteem and other mental health problems.

All are welcome at the monthly meetings. Membership includes parents, grandparents, educators and others disquieted about the problems affecting our youth. Some parents have brought daughters and sons with them. Annual membership fees are $10 to cover meeting costs.

For further information, contact Judy Orcutt at 231-2037 or by email at <jjorcutt@bellsouth.net>. Claudia Jiménez can be reached at 231-5799 or by email at <clj32@cornell.edu>.
