TEEN SAFETY IS HEALTH-E TEENS NOVEMBER TOPIC
Contributed by: Joyce Levi on 11/10/2007

Miguel Cruz, school resource officer, and Darlene Forage, a Treasure Coast community relations specialist, will talk about "Teens in Crisis: Tips for Keeping Teens Safe" at the November 29 meeting of the Health-E Teens Coalition. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Vero Beach Community Center, 2266 14th Avenue.

Formed last fall, the Health-E Teens Coalition is in its second year of providing expert information to parents of teenagers, based on the parental need to be informed on issues affecting their children. This is the second in the 2007-2008 series, "Educating for Healthy Decision-Making," and is open to parents, grandparents, teachers and other concerned citizens interested in learning about solutions to teenage dilemmas.

Cruz has been school resource officer (SRO) at the Freshman Learning Center for eight years. The SRO program began in 1986 to help establish a relationship between law enforcement and youth. Their primary goals are safety and enforcement along with counseling and education. Mr. Cruz has also been assigned to the drug unit and uniform patrol. He is a nine-year member of the SWAT team, and has over 1500 hours of law enforcement in areas including drug use, school related crime, and gang training. He is married with three children, and is president of a local little league.

Forage is a community relations specialist for 211 Palm Beach/Treasure Coast. She provides community awareness activities such as presentations to community organizations, civic entities and adult/elder/teen groups regarding 211 and its services. She has over five years experience in advocacy - first, as a victim's advocate working for the State Attorneys Office in the 15th Judicial Circuit of Florida, and later as a student advocate working for Indian River Community College. She earned her bachelors' degree in political science from Florida Atlantic University.

HETC membership fees are $10 a year to cover meeting costs. For further information, contact group leaders Judy Orcutt at 231-2037 or by email at <jjorcutt@bellsouth.net>. Claudia Jiménez can be reached at 231-5799 or by email at <clj32@cornell.edu>.
