Dasie Hope Center Celebrates Black History Month

Thursday, February 28th at 4:30pm, the Dasie Hope Center kitchen was transformed into a Soul Food Diner. The food was laid out buffet style and included fried chicken, baked ham, macaroni and cheese, collard greens , sweet potatoes, black eyed peas, rice, corn bread and many dessert choices. Staff, volunteers, board members and family filled their plates and stomachs.

Once the body was fed the soul could be fed. Students had prepared essays on what Black History Month means to them. Three essay winners were chosen. Jasmine Horskin, a 5th grader, respected the people who worked for civil rights because now she is able to "say what I feel, go where I want to go and do what I want to do."
She added that, "she would never judge someone by color or culture" because "good people come in all colors shapes and sizes."

Samantha Cruz, also a 5th grader, stated that, "Black History is special to me. It teaches me what happened in the past and what we can prevent in the future. Ms Cruz interviewed the director of Dasie Hope Center, Ms. Wright. She found out the Center is named for Ms Wright's mother, who dreamed of a place where children could go after school and feel safe and learn.

The final winner was Abby Maldonado, a senior in High School. She believes that Black History month is also applicable to many minorities because the same ideals and principles should apply to everyone. She has learned to never lose pride in who she is and where she has come from. She stated that, "by embracing our past and honoring our ancestors we secure a bright future....when we keep an open mind more opportunities will become available (to us) than to those who are ignorant to the beauties of diversity."

Each of the winners received a monetary gift. Gifts were also given to the thirteen students who achieved the A/B honor roll at their home school. The honor roll students will be going to Wannado theme park in Ft. Lauderdale. Private donors have contributed to the cost of this rewarding trip.

Finally, we all celebrated two of our students who have been accepted to local colleges. James McGriff was accepted at FAMU in Tallahassee. Abby Maldonado has been accepted at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne with a full academic scholarship and has signed with the golf team.
